Everyone deserves the chance to thrive in a workplace that values their strengths, not one that sidelines them for being wired a little differently. That’s why we’re proud to announce that Intercity is now a member of Neurodiversity in Business (NiB).

This UK-wide industry body champions the inclusion of neurodivergent people in work. Our goal is to help build a culture where every colleague, regardless of how they think or process the world, is understood, supported and empowered to bring their full potential to the table.

Why this matters

Around 15 to 20% of the UK population is neurodivergent. That includes people with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, Tourette’s and more. These aren’t conditions to be “fixed”. They’re different ways of thinking, learning, working and communicating. And they come with serious strengths.

Neurodivergent individuals are often creative problem solvers. They bring hyper-focus, attention to detail and fresh ways of approaching challenges. They’re entrepreneurs, innovators, strategists and critical thinkers.

But despite all this potential, the workplace continues to leave many behind.

Only 16% of autistic adults are in full-time paid work

45% of neurodivergent people have lost or left a job because they weren’t properly understood

Fewer than 1 in 10 organisations are actively focusing on neurodiversity in their workplace strategies

This is a massive missed opportunity. And it’s one we refuse to ignore. At a time when the demand for talent is fierce and innovation is everything, businesses can’t afford to overlook people who think differently. The smartest teams are the most diverse, and that includes how our brains work.

What we’re doing

By joining NiB, we’re stepping into a national movement that turns awareness into action. We’ll work closely with experts to review how we support neurodivergent colleagues at every stage. From recruitment and onboarding through to career development and leadership, we want to get it right.

We’ll use NiB’s best practice insights, training resources and the Neurodiversity Maturity Index to guide our progress. These tools will help us build a workplace that not only understands neurodivergence, but actively seeks it out as a source of strength.

Because this isn’t just the right thing to do. It’s smart business. Embracing neurodiversity helps us access untapped talent, reduce turnover and build teams that are more innovative, resilient and reflective of the world around us.

Putting “We Care” into action

One of our core values is “We Care”, and that means more than being friendly or supportive when it’s easy. It means removing barriers. Listening without judgement. Designing systems that work for real people, not just policies.

It’s about creating space where everyone, regardless of how their brain works, can do great work and feel like they belong.

This is just the beginning

We know there’s more to learn. But this step marks our commitment to making Intercity a place where neurodivergent people are recognised, valued and supported.

We’ll share our journey as it unfolds and invite others to help shape what comes next.
