September Tech Recap: JLR, purpose-built agents, eSIMs & Windows 10
Welcome back to the Tech Recap: Here's the September Update.
The Jaguar Land Rover’s cyber crisis drives on.
Another month of shutdowns has left not just JLR, but the smaller businesses in its supply chain, paralysed. One attack one breach has had ripple effects across the sector, stalling production and costing millions.
- Find and fix gaps before attackers do.
- Reinforce your security controls.
- Train your people they’re your first line of defence.
This isn’t a one off, cyber-attacks are on the rise, targeting everything from Heathrow Airport to nurseries, and even Jeremy Clarkson’s pub.
Microsoft’s purpose-built agents: always-on AI collaboration
Copilots new purpose-built agents enable an always-on approach to AI collaboration. Each agent is tailored to the way your team communicates, keeping everyone aligned and focused on goals. Agents can be created for each team channel, gathering information from chat history to provide context-aware support.
Example: Need to track progress against your agenda? Ask the facilitator agent to generate a clear roadmap for your meetings. It keeps your team aligned while also pulling in answers from the web when questions arise.
Microsoft launches new SMB security suites
Small and medium-sized businesses are under more pressure than ever to protect sensitive data, stay compliant, and manage the risks that come with AI. To help, Microsoft has rolled out three new security suites designed specifically for the mid-market:
- Defender Suite for Business Premium
- Purview Suite for Business Premium
- Defender + Purview Suite for Business Premium
These new bundles bring extended detection and response (XDR), stronger data protection, and simplified compliance tools all priced for SMB budgets.
SMBs don’t have the same security resources as enterprise organisations, but the risks they face are just as real. These new suites make it easier and more affordable to close gaps, protect critical data, and keep your business compliant without adding unnecessary complexity.
A world without the Physical SIM
Apple’s latest iPhone launch without a traditional SIM card has sparked questions about whether the rest of the industry will follow. Historically, when Apple makes a bold move, others often take note think the notch or the removal of the charging brick. eSIMs have been around for a while, offering an alternative to physical SIMs rather than a full replacement. Companies like Google and Samsung have embraced eSIMs while still supporting traditional SIMs, and Apple is following the same path. CCS Insights reported that 1.3 billion smartphones with eSIMs were in use by the end of 2024, with that number expected to hit 3.1 billion by 2030.
What this means for you: Physical SIMs remain a reliable, essential part of today’s mobile devices, and they aren’t going away anytime soon. At the same time, eSIM adoption is growing, offering businesses and users new flexibility. Keeping up with both technologies ensures you’re prepared for future devices without compromising the systems you already rely on.
Windows 10: end of the road.
This is the final week before Microsoft pulls the plug on Windows 10. No more security updates, bug fixes, performance improvements, or support leaving devices increasingly vulnerable. That’s a risk your business simply can’t afford.
Start by backing up your files and checking if your PC can run Windows 11 using Microsoft’s Health Check tool. If it can’t, replace it before it becomes a weak link. For businesses, take a wider view: audit hardware, plan upgrades at scale, and ensure business-critical apps run smoothly. Tools like Endpoint Manager or Windows Autopatch make rollouts easier. If upgrades aren’t possible, budget now for new devices that keep your business secure.
With Windows 10 out of support, your files, systems, and business are exposed. Upgrading to Windows 11 or moving to compatible devices is essential to stay secure, supported, and protected.
