As the mobile workforce grows, so does demand for Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) products.  EMM typically incorporates mobile device management, mobile application management, mobile security and mobile content management. The EMM market was worth £1.4 billion in 2017 and is expected to reach a weighty £2.5 billion by 2021.

EMM is an all-encompassing approach that secures and enables employees to use smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices for business purposes. Whilst securing corporate information is the primary purpose of EMM, having an effective mobile management strategy makes employees more productive by giving them the right apps and tools to work securely and ‘on the go’.

According to Gartner’s 2016 Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Mobility Management Suites, the key capabilities for an EMM solution are:

  • Mobile Device Management is all about managing your devices, such as mobile phones and tablets, over their lifecycles, including features such as inventory tracking, operating system configuration management, provisioning, de-provisioning, remote wiping and remote control.
  • Mobile Application Management allows your administrators to control apps on devices, perform app updates and maintain app policies on company-owned and employee-owned devices.
  • Mobile Content Management allows your administrators to define rules governing corporate content distribution and handling in order to meet compliance policies.
  • Identity & Access Management facilitates the installation of certificates for users and devices, for app code signing and for enforcing security controls through contextual data.
  • Containerisation vs. Policy Controls– some EMM vendors isolate corporate data in a secure area whereas others offer policy setting & management.

Whilst EMM suites are about management, saving IT teams from carrying out the same repetitive provisioning work, they also contribute to enterprise security, protecting sensitive corporate data. To choose the right EMM suite requires IT departments to understand their own business needs and the capabilities encompassing management, operations and security.

If your business is thinking about deploying an EMM strategy, start by asking questions about things like whether your employees own their devices, mobile operating system support, the kinds of applications supported and whether different users require different access rights and capabilities.
