Just this week, Parliament’s Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy said ministers had “no real sense of the scale of the problem” when it comes to the cyber security skills-gap within our industry.

As an organisation within the technology industry, we have a responsibility to look for ways to be inclusive of the cross-section of our society and to leverage the talent of those who might come to the world of tech from less traditional backgrounds. I am personally very proud that at Intercity we are launching an apprenticeship scheme this year with an initial intake of 9 new apprentices.

With the ever-increasing risks presented by cyber threats, we’re committed to delivering effective cyber security measures for businesses of all sizes and to be able to do that, we know we have got to have the right people with the necessary skills at Intercity to support this expanding part of our business.

When I started my career as an apprentice, I didn’t ever think that I would have had such an enjoyable and rewarding career.  I was lucky that when I entered the world of work, I met people who were supportive of my career and invested in my development, who also became lifelong friends.

If you want to read more about my journey, you can have a read of the interview I gave which was included in our most recent issue of Intercity Tech which focused on addressing the skills-gap within our sector.

Whilst we know we’re not the whole solution to the current skills-gap shortage within our industry, at Intercity, we’re committed to creating and maintaining an apprenticeship scheme that will stand the test of time. Since it was launched earlier this year, we’ve recruited 5 new apprentices. Of those, four will be working towards their Level 4 Network Engineering Apprenticeship Qualification.

Whilst we’re a Birmingham-based business, we have offices in Bolton, Elstree and Oakham. Two of our apprentices will be working from our Elstree office, as Network Engineers supporting our London-based customers.

What is an MSP (Managed Service Provider)Both Birmingham and Bolton will be supporting one Engineer each as they settle into their roles, supporting our customers remotely from our Intercity Security Operation Centres (‘ISOC’). We have also brought an apprentice on board who will be working towards their Level 4 Associate Project Manager Qualification based in the Birmingham Office helping to deliver key projects across the business.

But we’re not finished yet. We’re still on the look-out for a Level 4 Software Developer Apprentice to work in our Oakham office (the Assessment Centre will be taking place on Wednesday 1st August), four Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner Apprentices, and we’re also looking to fill a vacancy for a Level 4 Professional Accounting Apprentice in Birmingham.

We’re always looking to bring fresh talent through the Intercity doors, and there will be more opportunities coming in the near future, so keep a keen eye on our website for more vacancies as and when they arise.

Do you know someone who would be perfect for these roles, who would like to earn and learn whilst building their CV? If they want to have an informal chat before submitting an application, encourage them to contact Sarah Potter or Christina Pendleton from our HR team with their questions.

We know that as a business, and with our people-first ethos, Intercity can only be as good as the people that drive it forward. We are proud to employ some of the brightest and most innovative minds within our sector at Intercity.

Maybe you’ve got a passion for all things mobile, or you have the skill and enquiring mind needed to work within managed services. Perhaps you’re a keen salesperson with a passion for providing perfect solutions to customers and their unique businesses.
